Holistic Approach to Wellness
Many people believe that colds and flu are caused by bacteria, but that isn’t the case. Colds and flu are caused by viruses, and using antibiotics to treat a viral infection is ineffective. For years we have been prescribed antibiotics where it wasn’t necessary. Unfortunately, even one dose of antibiotics can throw off the immune system and cause Dysbiosis (imbalance in gut flora). I see a lot of people with candida which is an imbalance in gut flora (yeast overgrowth) and becomes an infection (candidiasis). Candida can go systemic and cause a lot of problems in the system. Learn more about candida and how to control it. Learn more about Candida.
What is the immune system?
The immune system is our bodies defense The human body provides an ideal environment for many microbes, such as viruses, bacteria, fungi, and parasites, and the immune system prevents and limits their entry and growth to maintain optimal health.. Interestingly, 80% of the immune system is in the gut. Eating and absorbing proper nutrients is key in keeping the immune system strong. We strive for homeostasis meaning harmony. It’s a daily task but well worth the effort.
What to eat to prevent a cold
Keeping your immune strong is key. Eat your veggies! Greens for the most part and a good variety for optimal nutrition intake. Don’t eat the same thing all the time or your body will become intolerant. Mix it up! Eat protein with fruit to help with the glycemic load. That is especially important for those with sugar sensitivities or pre-diabetic and limit your fruit to 1-2 servings a day. Next section we will tell you why. Adding greens and green powders to your morning protein smoothie is always a good thing. Speaking of protein. Eat 25 grams within one hour of waking up to “break the fast”. This is key to help balance blood sugar and give you a good start to the day. I recommend a good quality plant based protein powder. Add flax oil or ground flax and chia, greens, berries, clean water or unsweetened almond milk. You can use basic plant based protein powders for the protein or use nutraceutical powders for medicinal purpose such as i5 by Xymogen for inflammation, OptimetaboliX by Xymogen for blood sugar balance or Clearvite by Apex Energetics for detox. Good protein with each meal gives you the amino acids you need for repair. Choose organic lean meats, nuts and seeds (except peanuts), salmon and white fish (wild caught). Add healthy oils such as olive oil or coconut oil to your meals. See more on healthy fats on our website. Choosing Fats. Drink plenty of good quality water. Rule of thumb is half your body weight in ounces daily. That means if you weigh 150 pounds you need to drink 75 ounces of water per day. Water help the body flush toxins through sweating and urine. If your urine is clear you are more than likely drinking enough water. If your urine is dark that’s a sign of dehydration. If it smells sweet get your sugars tested. See our optimal food list.
What not to eat
The biggest culprit is sugar. Sugar is toxic on so many levels. Sugar feeds candida and cancer cells. Limit your daily intake to 25 grams or less. That includes fruit. To keep things in perspective one cup of blueberries is 15 grams of sugar and one apple is 19 grams. One energy bar can have 25 grams alone so be careful when choosing. I usually have a small handful of berries in my morning smoothie and half an apple with almond butter for a snack. I don’t usually buy bars but if I happen to need one on the go I’ll try to eat half of the bar to control the sugar intake or make my own protein bars full of optimal ingredients. Even worse, sugar substitutes (artificial sugar) is toxic. Artificial sugar such as Splenda, Aspartame, saccharin, sucralose, and acesulfame-K also found in processed foods are all made from chemicals. They are toxins in the body and cannot be processed. Alcohol in excess can also weaken the immune system and plays havoc with candida. Limit your intake to 1 drink for woman and 2 for men. Fast foods and processed foods may be convenient but they are not healthy. Fast food is filled with trans fat, refined sugars, high amounts of sodium not to mention a lot of empty carbohydrates. Also consider GMO’s (genetically modified organisms) and toxins from non-organic ingredients. All of this is poison to the immune system. Make sure you are aware of your food intolerances. We use the IgG Panel from Great Plain Lab quite a bit to establish a base line with patients. When we have an intolerance and we eat those foods the body creates an inflammatory response. If we keep eating those foods the inflammation becomes chronic. Inflammation causes 80% of disease. Read more about inflammation and its link to disease. Inflammations link to disease.
Supplements for the immune system
Specializing in GI disorders I’m always working on repairing and rebuilding the immune system. There are a lot of products out there but it’s important not to self-medicate as it can be dangerous. Each patient is unique and the process in healing is too. It’s important to work with a professional. Nutraceuticals are different than supplements you buy off the shelf because they are guaranteed and tested in third party labs. The ingredients are pharmaceutical grade and certified as such. Studies have shown the products you get off the shelf in some cases do not have the accurate amount of ingredients stated on the label so if you do buy off the shelf know and trust your manufacturers. Here are some suggestions for building the immune system.
Probiomax DF by Xymogen. ProbioMax Daily DF is a probiotic providing four researched strains totaling 30 billion of beneficial bacteria, including the extensively studied HN019 strain of Bifidobacterium lactis.
Smart Silver by Des Bio is an engineered nanoparticle, not a colloidal silver. It is manufactured using 10,000 volts of current, energizing the entire water base, enabling Smart Silver to work as a catalyst to kill bacteria as it draws energy from its environment and emits energy at wavelengths that are measured at 890 to 910 terahertz. This is the same frequency at which germicidal ultraviolet light resonates and is deadly to bacteria. Therefore, Smart Silver, due to the patented revolutionary process of its manufacture, does not deal with bacteria on merely a chemical level, as do colloidal silvers, but also works on a measurable energetic level. I carry this in my purse and use it daily as a preventative measure.
Stellar C™ is rich in vitamin C (from a mixture of ascorbic acid and acerola fruit) and plant bioflavonoids (hesperidin, rutin, quercetin and mixed citrus bioflavonoids), known for their immunoprotective properties. In addition to supporting healthy immune function, these nutrients have been used historically for applications such as maintaining healthy veins, capillaries, skin, hair and nails by supporting normal collagen production and repair. Vitamin C is fantastic for the immune system and helps uptake the nutrients in foods and other supplements. It’s best to break up the doses so I’d recommend taking 500 mg twice a day for maintenance and for the flu double the dose.
D3 Liquid by Xymnogen is cholecalciferol derived from lanolin and provided in a liquid base of sunflower oil and purified water. In this liquid formula, vitamin D and sunflower oil are combined using a special micro-emulsification process designed to create a natural micellized matrix which, when coated by the stomach bile, will encourage absorption. With D3 a good maintenance dose is 5,000 IU and if the body is compromised with the flu take 10,000 IU daily for 3-4 days then back to maintenance dose. Since Vitamin D is fat soluble, it’s important to get your levels checked to make sure you are taking optimal amounts.
Zinc Supreme™ by Designs for Health offers chelated minerals by Albion Advanced Nutrition, the leader in mineral technology. The zinc is zinc bis-glycinate chelate and the molybdenum is bis-glycinate chelate. These are ideal chelates with a 2:1 molar ratio of two amino acids of glycine chemically bonded in liquid to one mineral ion of zinc or molybdenum for optimal absorption. These minerals are combined with other nutrients like vitamins B6 and taurine to provide superior results.
OptiMetaboliX™ by Xymogen is an exclusive combination of well-researched, clinically validated, and highly bioavailable ingredients that provides multimodal support for healthy insulin and glucose metabolism and related pathways. It features InSea2®—an optimized blend of purified polyphenols from wild-crafted brown seaweed. InSea2 uniquely slows carbohydrate digestion and assimilation and can reduce the impact of high-glycemic foods. This newly developed, next generation dual carb controller is 100% natural, has an excellent safety profile, and is friendly to the gastrointestinal tract. This is a great protein powder to help balance blood sugar on a daily basis. Ideal for those who have insulin sensitivity.
i5™ by Xymogen represents an innovative approach to biotransformation for individuals whose health is constantly challenged. This all-natural, fructose-free formula includes ingredients that promote overall gastrointestinal health and support detoxification mechanisms and cytokine balance in the body. i5 features patented and proprietary ingredients, including 21 g of VegaPro™, a non-GMO, vegetable-based protein, as well as IgG 2000 CWP™, OncoPLEX™ (glucoraphanin), and arabinogalactan, a prebiotic. One of my favorites to keep inflammation down.
ClearVite™ by Apex Energetics helps support liver detoxication reactions and the biliary system by offering hypoallergenic nutrients, enzymatic cofactors, metabolic precursors, and phytonutrients. It can also support metabolic pathways and the immune system through its unique combination of nutrients and cofactors. It further includes protein and amino acids that can help reduce temporary fluctuations of blood sugar that may normally occur between meals. This formula incorporates high-potency vitamin C, thiamin, riboflavin, vitamin B6, vitamin B12, and manganese. It is also an excellent source of niacin, biotin, and chromium. Another favorite as a daily detox.
